Fancy a trip to Loodon, Edinboro or Darbie?

Fancy a trip to Loodon, Edinboro or Darbie?

With the Summer holidays now very much in full swing and with most of us jetting off to sunnier climes (or indeed choosing to enjoy the more unpredictable weather here in Blighty), a leading chain of hotels has revealed the most common place names to be misspelled on its dedicated booking site...

Over one million customers visit Travelodge’s website every week, but the chain has confirmed that a staggering fifth of all place names entered into the site are spelled incorrectly – with the top three very worryingly being some of the UK’s most popular tourist towns and cities.

So who exactly is in this holiday hall of typo fame?  We wanted to share the Zen team’s own favourites included on Travelodge’s top 20 list…

London | Landan, Loodon

Torquay | Tourkey, Torkie

Bath | Barth, Barff

Glasgow | Glazgo, Glarsgow, Glassgow

Bicester | Bisster, Bizester

Windsor | Windsore, Winsore, Winsor

Edinburgh | Edinboro, Edinburg, Edinbough

The reason for some of these spelling atrocities could be of course down to overzealous finger work on the keyboard (the ‘o’ is very close to the ‘u’), the reminiscence of 17th century town names (which have since evolved with historic spellings now defunct), or the result of good old phonetics – spell-it-like-it-sounds...

Whatever the reasons for these recurrent spelling errors, are any of them at all forgivable?  Not if you want to actually arrive at the destination you intended! Some even argue that the responsibility lies with the hotel chains to ensure that their online search functions are improved to better predict what people actually mean by their misspelled entries…

The fact is that, whilst these spelling errors may be the source of much amusement (they certainly have been here at Zen HQ), holiday seekers everywhere need to be careful… imagine ending up sipping raki in a beautiful Istanbul café, when all you really fancied was a stroll along a Torquay beach. :-)
